COLUMBUS, OH-On Tuesday, Oct. 22, Lorain-Medina Rural Electric, North Central Electric, and Firelands Electric cooperatives participated in 2024’s Cooperative Youth Day in Columbus. Over 50 sophomores and juniors from schools across the combined co-op service areas, LMRE board members, several teachers, and co-op staff boarded buses and headed to Columbus for a day filled with knowledge of state history, government, and politics.
Students enjoyed a VIP tour of the Statehouse, met with state senators and representatives, and had the chance to dive into »Æ¹Ï¶ÌÊÓƵ’s vibrant history. Among those who welcomed our group were senators Reineke and Gavarone, representatives Stein, McClain, and Click, and staffers for Representative Miller.Ìý
For many students, this was a unique and eye-opening experience, providing a behind-the-scenes look at politics and legislation. They were surprised to discover just how much time and effort goes into passing bills, even with bipartisan support. When asked about their key takeaways, many shared a newfound understanding and appreciation for the political process—something they felt was especially important as they approach voting age and prepare to engage as active citizens.
